Perhaps the Moon will Heal Me
I wish they would prescribe nature instead of medicine and stars instead of shots. I wish I could gaze upon wildflowers and the cells in my body would be healed. I want to lay in the grass and soak in the sun and be told that I have accomplished all the treatment I need. I want to meet a doctor on a mountaintop and have them say that s'mores and bonfires are the cure for what ails me.
I wish that instead of doctors offices I was prescribed beaches and sand beneath my toes. The answer! (they will shout) is MORE VACATION! The pill! (they will declare) is higher quality chocolate and puppies that lick your toes.
I wish that instead of the smells of saline and surface cleaners I could go to an appointment and be handed a drink in a coconut and be greeted by sunshine and a large man playing the ukulele.
Instead of death, I would see life. Instead of suffering, I would see joy.
I wish that the answer to my problems was to spend more time in the mountains, gaining strength in my muscles and power in my bones, and not more pills on the table every morning.
I wish every doctor would pat me on the back and tell me I am their favorite and of course everything will be fine, silly, you've done all the right things and life is fair and nothing bad happens when you take all the medicine. In fact (they might say) medicine is out and magic is in! A little fairy dust and a little laughter and wa-la! Healed. Perfection. A model patient.
I want my prescription to be fresh air and friendship, climbing trees and reading more books, listening to the birds sing and letting their music wrap around my heart.
I wish, that nature was my medicine and I never had to worry again.
(And I wish that I did not have to declare that this is not a statement on naturopaths vs medical advice. I believe firmly in the power of my medications. And I know nature can also be healing to me. I just want the prescription to be chocolate, ok? And let's all be honest with ourselves, that isn't what will do it. So please, don't tell me the magic of mushrooms or the healing power of kale. I take my medicine with a dose of sunshine and call it the best of both worlds).
(Also, Jeff, I think the doctor just called and said I need to go to Italy and eat gelato. It is mandatory. Non-negotiable. Don't question it!)
Have fun in Italy!
