Thanksgiving Blessings

I can't believe that at the end of this month I will be standing next to my husband. . . husband. I truly can't wrap my mind around it. It feels so dreamy I swear that if you wake me up I will be so mad. I never want this reality to end. God is so incredibly good. Man, He just knows what we need when we need it. I should be better about trusting Him after seeing Him in action like this. It's all so good. 

 I have to admit it has been quite the journey. Selflessness is not my nature. But every day I love Cameron more and every day that leads me to want to serve him more. A good reflection of our relationship with Christ, isn't it? The more we get to know Him, the more we love Him, the more we want to serve Him. Crazy how God gives us such a picture of our relationship with Him through the imperfect relationship with another human. God's a clever fella.

At any rate, as Cameron and I begin our lives together we have the privilege to begin as "mom and dad" and "auntie and uncle" to some of the coolest and most amazing teenagers on the planet. It has been such a light of my life to see my ministry transform into our ministry. We get to have cool experiences together like picking up of our kids for Thanksgiving this year, with all of Cameron's family. When I picked him up at his house he had had a redbull and 2 cookies for breakfast. Thank goodness we had better meals ahead!

It was the greatest joy to bring him through the door as our surrogate son. He is one cool kid and we really enjoy our time with him. One of my favorite quotes was when we were walking back up the stairs to my apartment after being filled up with deliciousness. As I mentioned the problem with the fact that I was carrying everything he exclaimed, "Like father, like son! We both leave mom to carry everything!"

What a privilege to be an example of family for him. What a task set before us to be the father and mother that he wants to emulate. What a blessing to have him and so many others as our sons, daughters, nephews, and nieces as we enter into marriage.

You know what they say. . . the more the merrier! And we welcome any of these kids that choose to walk alongside us in life. I guess I had quite a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. :)

Endings and Beginnings

 I've had a lot of endings that are also beginnings.  In fact, I've lived in Jeff's house for 3.5 years and that's the longest I've lived in a single home since I left Virginia at the age of 16. For over half of my life I have been without roots. I've lived in 9 homes in the last 12 years. That is absurd.  And the truth is, I don't want to be rootless anymore. Faith Within Suffering

 I didn't talk about God for a while.  When I was younger, I never stopped. My oldest friend and I laughed last weekend about how I would pray for her to attend church when we were kids and tell her about my prayers. When I was in college, it was my purpose. On the reservation it was my profession.  When the waves of suffering hit, I still professed God's goodness for a while, but eventually it became too much. The waves kept knocking me down every time I tried to get up. I was sick in a cancer ward. My relationship with church completely upended. My marriage destroyed.  I stopped talking about my God because I couldn't make sense of my suffering or anyone else's pain. I didn't have any of my youthful certainty. I just had a whole bunch of questions and a whole lot of anger.  Until life got better. Until I got perspective. Until I stood in the snow among the Tetons and said to the wind, "Ok, God, I'm ready. Let's do this again. I'm with you."

Five Years After the Divorce

It has been five years, this December, since a judge declared my marriage officially over. It was the culmination of the worst season of my whole life. It was the end of something I had believed was forever. It was a season of bitter tears, struggles with depression and thoughts of suicide, and complete and utter hopelessness. Everything I had believed in had been shattered and in the end, I hadn't been chosen by the one who I chose to marry. I believed the false narrative that I hadn't been good enough, strong enough, or healthy enough. I was certain happiness would never find me again.  Over the next five years, I had to rediscover myself. I had to relearn my strength, my worth, my value. I had to heal from what had happened. I had to be angry and learn how to let that anger go. I lost my relationship with church and grew new relationships with a team of doctors when I got a cancer diagnosis just four months after my divorce was finalized.
